End of Texas tour ....

Posted by anonymous on October 31, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Sitting in an a bad mexican restaurant in the San Antonio airport, waiting my flight to Atlanta, then D.C.  Just finished my swing through Texas, six appearances ending in a lecture / conversation at the University of Texas at Brownsville, with Dr Tony Zavaleta.

The Book Festival in Austin went very well, and I was approached by a freelance reporter with plenty of pluck, who wanted to do an in-depth interview with me and my family in South Texas for the New York Times.  Yesterday, we received word they're interested, and the interview is proceeding.  Fantastic.

I'll be on the Diane Rehme show tomorrow at 11 am, east coast time.  And:  big announcement coming soon about BKOT's optioning for H-wood.

Spoke to three classes of fairly uninterested high school students on Monday morning, in a large auditorium at my former high school.  Except for an odd, uncomfortable exchange with the alpha female principle and the paramilitary interrogation at the start of the morning, it actually went quite well, though it confirms my suspicions that a.) teenagers are mostly dicks and b.) the worst kind of audience.  But the teachers were a delight, and I was able to elevate my former journalism teacher, Blanca Perez, as a true inspiration for a lost kid, way back when.

Will have more to say, except that I forgot my fricken power cord for the MacBook, so I have to parcel out the battery.

Do stay tuned ....

Can't wait to read your book and have my non-jerk 15 year old read it. From what I've seen of his friends they would love to hear you speak. I bet you are on the verge of finding some great high school audiences. - All the best - pulling for you on the NBA.

Hello there--I just listened to your interview on the Diane Rehme show while at work...can't wait to get your book! I lived in Seattle for many years, and now am teaching in Tucson, AZ. I hear snippets of my students' lives that are echoed in your growing up. Best wishes on the Book award!

Just heard you on the Diane Rehme show and I cannot wait to read your book! I am also from South Texas, now living in Arizona. I taught various grades and served as an administrator for 25 years, don't despair with those teenagers--I would bet they were taking in more than you think. They just can't show it--not cool, you know. Just think of it like those starfish on the beach, if it made a difference to even one, you've done a service. Congratulations on your nomination. I wish you the best!

I actually caught you on the Diane Rheem show as I drove to work......I live in Oakalnd, Ca and work in Pittsburg, which is a small town that once upon a time was working class, now it's a struggling working class town. Most of my patients there are Hispanic, many undocumented. I provide medical care, birth control and moral support. Although my mother's family is not hispanic, they are relatively recent immigrants also and thus much of your story resonated with me. I really enjoyed your interview and I am so looking forward to reading your book.

Hi there. I'm a Laredoan living in Phoenix, and I can't wait to read your book. I teach ENG & Chicano Lit. at one of the area community colleges, so I'm especially interested in possibly using your book in my class. Oddly enough, one of my British co-workers told me about your book. Anyway, kudos on all all of the accolades!

So sorry I missed you on your tour through Texas. I'm reading your book right now, and I absolutely love it. I'm from San Antonio, Hispanic, grew up with the God of Thunder for a dad. There's so much in your stories that resonates. Thank you so much for your honesty and your beautiful prose. Much luck with the National Book Award and much continued success!
